Hälsningar till min geografilärare i gymnasiet!

Jag hadde aldrig trott att jag skulle börja studera geografi. Det kunde jag inte föreställa mig då jag studerade i gymnasiet och genomförde några obligatoriska kurser. Visst gillade jag det, men inte till den grad att jag ens skulle ha funderat på att jag skulle börja studera geografi vid universitetet. Jag började studera journalistik istället. Det gjorde jag i ett år och sedan kom jag fram till att arbetet som journalist var för stressigt för mig. Så jag måste hitta på någonting annat.

Av någon anledning hade jag börjat inse att man får hålla på mycket med kartor då man studerar geografi. Ända sedan jag var liten har jag älskat kartor, så jag sökte till att studera geografi vid universitetet.

Geografi passar för personer som är intresserade av flera olika saker

Jag var överraskad över att jag klarade inträdesprovet och kunde börja studera följande höst. Detta innebar att jag bytte bransch, campus och studiespråk. Jag har trivts jättebra med att studera geografi och studierna har mestadels varit intressanta. Ett problem som jag hade och fortsättningsvis har är att jag är intresserad av många olika saker och därför är geografi ett perfekt ämne att studera. Inom geografi vill man se saker ur ett brett perspektiv. Geografi fungerar som en slags bro mellan naturvetenskaperna och samhällsvetenskaperna.

Jag insåg att geografi inte endast går ut på att rita kartor (även om man gör det i stor utsträckning och det ofta är det allra roligaste!) utan även innebär mycket annat. I kandidatskedet studerade jag geoinformatik och u-landsforskning som biämnen. Geoinformatik handlar om att rita kartor (vilket jag gärna även skulle ha gjort i gymnasiet). U-landsforskning är mycket mer teoretiskt, men även det intressant. Jag har även genomfört enskilda kurser i sociologi, forstvetenskaper och främmande språk. Jag har även studerat grunderna i spanska och danska och i år börjar jag studera grunderna i ryska. Utbudet hos Helsingfors universitets Språkcentrum är helt unikt!

Vikarie på geografitimme i gymnasiet

Det känns väldigt länge sedan jag själv gick i gymnasiet. Jag har en gång varit vikarie på en geografilektion i gymnasiet. Jag kände mig lite gammal och det kändes som att ungdomarna tittade på mig lite som en geografinörd. I gymnasiet skulle jag inte ha trott att jag någon gång skulle prata inför andra gymnasiestuderande om segregation och orkaner.

Studier motiverar mig fortfarande

Jag kommer ihåg att jag tyckte om att studera i gymnasiet och det har hållit i sig även vid universitetet. Ibland känns det som att jag aldrig vill bli färdig, eftersom det finns så mycket intressant som jag skulle kunna och vilja studera. Geografi är dock och kommer även i framtiden att vara mitt förstahandsval. Det bästa är att man kan kombinera det med vilket annat läroämne som helst. Oberoende av om det är journalistik, u-landsforskning eller varför inte danska.
