We are pleased to announce that the second Online Olympiad in Linguistics is taking place this January. Secondary/high school students from any country are eligible to participate.

The 2020 Olympiad starts on Friday, January 24 (7:00 amUTC) and will run until Monday, January 27 (10:00 pmUTC). In order to participate, you must first register for the competition. You can then begin working on the problems at any time during the contest period. From the moment you first see the test, you will have 4 hours and 30 minutes to work on the problems and type in your answers. (Less time will be available if you start the test after 5:30 pmUTC on January 27.) You do not need to explain your answers in this year’s contest.

The test consists of four problems of varying difficulty. Some of the problems are interactive, and some feature audio or video. You’ll probably need a laptop or a desktop computer and a set of headphones to work comfortably. The problems are self-sufficient — you don’t need to have any prior knowledge of linguistics or languages to participate (apart from your chosen working language).

We currently offer EnglishRussianSpanishGerman, Portuguese (Brazilian), Romanian,
PolishUkrainian, Chinese (traditional), Japanese, and Korean as working languages: the problem set is available in each of these languages, and you can use any of them when inputting your answers. You can specify your working language during registration and update your preference in the contest area before you start working on the problems. Your choice, however, becomes final once you have seen the problem set.

The results of the contest will be published no later than January 31. Contestants will be able to appeal the results until February 2.

During the contest, participants are required to work individually and are not allowed to use any outside help. In particular, any interaction with other people or the Internet (apart from this website) is prohibited.

If you’ve got any questions or have encountered any issues, please contact us at info@onling.org or via our Facebook page.
