The third Online Olympiad in Linguistics starts on Friday, January 29 (7:00 amUTC) and will run until Monday, February 1 (10:00 pmUTC).

Secondary/high school students from any country are eligible to participate. In order to participate, you must register for the competition before it starts. You can then begin working on the problems at any time during the contest period. From the moment you first see the test, you will have 4 hours and 30 minutes to work on the problems and type in your answers. (Less time will be available if you start the test after 5:30 pmUTC on February 1.) You do not need to explain your answers in this year’s contest.

The test consists of four problems of varying difficulty. Some of the problems are interactive, and some feature audio or video. You’ll probably need a laptop or a desktop computer and a set of headphones to work comfortably. The problems are self-sufficient—you don’t need to have any prior knowledge of linguistics or languages to participate (apart from your chosen working language).

The problem set will be available in English, Czech, French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, KoreanPolishBrazilian Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, and Ukrainian. You can specify your working language during registration and update your preference in the contest area before you start working on the problems. Your choice, however, becomes final once you have seen the problem set.

The results of the contest will be published no later than February 5. Contestants will be able to appeal the results until February 7.

During the contest, participants are required to work individually and are not allowed to search for anything relevant to the problems on the Internet. This year, however, we allow using word processors, graphics editors, or spreadsheets to facilitate the solving process (you may want to explore free tools such as Libre Office, Google Docs/Sheets, Gimp or others before the contest).

We encourage students taking part for the first time to give our last year’s problems a try.

If you’ve got any questions or have encountered any issues, please contact us at info@onling.org or via our Facebook page.
