Alanko tutkii väitöskirjassaan seksuaalista asketismia varhaisessa kristillisyydessä sukupuolen ja ruumiillisuuden näkökulmasta. Tutkimuksen ytimessä ovat viisi apokryfisinä apostolien tekoina tunnettua kirjoitusta Pietarin teot, Paavalin teot, Johanneksen teot, Tuomaan teot sekä Andreaan teot, joissa kuvataan kristinuskoon kääntyviä ja askeettisen elämäntavan omaksuvia naisia. Monialaisessa tutkimuksessa kysytään yhtäältä, mitä seksuaalinen asketismi merkitsee sukupuolittuneen ruumiin kannalta, sekä toisaalta, miten askeettinen ruumis suhteutuu pelastuksen ja ruumiillisen ylösnousemuksen teologiaan. Alanko on valmistunut teologian maisteriksi Helsingin yliopistosta pääaineenaan Uuden testamentin eksegetiikka.

For her doctoral research, Alanko studies the theme of sexual asceticism in early Christianity. The source material consists of the five major apocryphal Acts of the Apostles, Acts of Peter, the Acts of John, the Acts of Andrew, and the Acts of Thomas. The topic was initially chosen in order to understand sexual asceticism more widely as a phenomenon, the reasons for its appeal within the early church, and to grasp the social implications of its theology. The work will aim at contributing to the discussion on sexual asceticism from the perspective of the body by asking, what are the implications of sexual asceticism for the embodied reality and, more specifically, for the gendered body? How is sexual asceticism related to the theological ideas of salvation and bodily resurrection? Alanko is a graduate from Helsinki University with specialization in biblical studies and early Christian literature.
