Klassiset kenttätyöt ovat jossain mielessä kuin pyhiinvaelluksia. Tutkija poistuu tavallisesta ympäristöstään, matkustaa jonnekin kauas ja viettää siellä aikaa erityisessä olotilassa (tarkkaavaisena, vastaanottavana, oppimishaluisena ja valmiina yllätyksiin). Parhaassa tapauksessa vieraista voi tulla läheisiä ja kentällä syntyy kanssakäymistä, josta kaikki osallistujat saavat iloa ja uusia kokemuksia.

Kävin lokakuussa jälleen kerran Siperiassa Krasnojarskin alueella Haidan kylässä, jonne siirtyi setoja 1900-luvun ensi vuosina. Ahkerat setot sopeutuivat pian uuteen kotimaahansa: Haidan kylään rakennettiin kirkko ja koulutalossa alettiin opettaa viroksi. Kolhoosien muodostaminen 1930-luvun lopulla katkaisi kylien perinteisen elämäntavan. Pienemmät setokylät hävisivät, asukkaita siirrettiin suurempiin kyliin, vironkielinen kouluopetus vaihdettiin venäjänkieliseksi ja kirkot suljettiin.

Haidan kylän kirkkorakennus seisoi aluksi tyhjillään ja sitten siitä tehtiin viljankuivaamo. Myöhemmin kirkon paikalle rakennettiin kulttuuritalo (samanlainen uskonnon korvaaminen ateismilla tapahtui monissa Siperian kylissä, esimerkiksi saman alueen Perovan ja Narvan kylissä, joissa asui samoin setoja). Miten ortodoksiset setot jatkoivat elämäänsä, kun kirkko oli tuhottu ja uskonto kielletty? Koska ei ollut pappeja, jotka kastaisivat lapsia tai siunaisivat vainajia, kyläläiset alkoivat itse huolehtia näistä toimista. Aluksi toimivat vanhemmat ihmiset, jotka olivat käyneet vironkielistä koulua ja osasivat lukea latinalaisella kirjaimistolla laadittuja hengellisiä tekstejä. Usein juuri vanhat naiset (joskus myös luterilaistaustaiset) ottivat ortodoksipappien tehtävät hoitaakseen. Siten nykyisessä Haidan kylässä asuukin enimmäkseen ortodokseja, jotka ovat kastettu uskonnollista koulutusta vailla olevien vanhojen naisten toimesta, He eivät ole ehkä kertaakaan elämässään käyneet ehtoollisella eivätkä kirkossakaan. Vanhemmilta peritty kieli, ortodoksi- ja muut perinteet eivät ole kuitenkaan kadonneet kylästä.

Haidan kylän kirkkoon liittyy paljon perinnettä. Monilla kyläläisillä on henkilökohtaisia ja ruumiillisia kokemuksia, jotka liittyvät siihen paikkaan ja traumaattiseen tarinaan. Vanhemmat ihmiset kertovat tarinoita kirkon purkamisesta – kellojen repimisestä alas ja ikonien pois viemisestä. Kirkon hirsistä rakennettiin kaunis asuintalo, jossa kyläläisten mukaan kenelläkään ei ollut kuitenkaan hyvä asua. Esimerkiksi Naadi, joka asuin jonkin aikaa siinä talossa, kertoi, miten siellä oli ollut ihmeellisen kylmä ja miten siellä asuessaan hänen miehensä ja äitinsä kuolivat. Se kaikki oli tehnyt häneen lähtemättömän vaikutuksen.

Kun olin vuonna 2012 Haidan kylässä, Valja etsi minut käsiinsä, sillä hänellä oli kerrottavana sydäntään painanut tarina. Valjalle oli näytetty unessa, että kulttuuritalon käymälä on ihan vanhan kirkon alttarin paikalla. Valja oli piirtänyt unessa näkemänsä kirkon pohjapiirroksen ja toivoi, että tekisin asialle jotain. Vallassani ei ollut muuta kuin levittää tarinaa kylässä, jotta syntyisi keskustelu. Nykyään Valja on helpottunut siitä, että hän on saanut kertoa tarinansa eteenpäin. Kulttuuritalon käymälä on kyllä vanhalla paikallaan, mutta väittely siitä, missä kirkko tarkasti ottaen oli ja sen alttari kulttuurimajaan verrattuna, jatkuu kylässä yhä.
