Langnetin mentorointiohjelma käynnistyy jälleen, tervetuloa mukaan joko mentoriksi tai aktoriksi! 

Ryhmämentorointia kokeiltiin ensimmäisen kerran Langnetissa vuonna 2017, ja onnistuneen kokeilun jälkeen ohjelma toteutettiin uudelleen vuosina 2019 ja 2020. Palaute on ollut kiittävää: mukana olleet kokivat saaneensa vertaistukea ja vinkkejä ja päässeensä käymään syvällisiä keskusteluja.

Vuoden 2022 Langnetin mentorointiohjelmaan on pyritty rekrytoimaan myös korkeakoulujen ulkopuolelle työllistyneitä kieliaineiden tohtoreita 3.12.2021 järjestetyn Langnetin joulukoulun urapäivän keskusteluiden inspiroimana.

Käynnistyvät mentorointiryhmät voivat kokoontua paikallisesti (koronatilanteen salliessa) tai verkon välityksellä. Ryhmiin pyritään saamaan yhdestä kahteen mentoria ja kahdesta neljään aktoria. Ryhmä voi itse päättää keskustelukielestä.

Ryhmämentoroinnin idea ja tarve

Ryhmämentoroinnissa mentori ohjaa pientä mentoroitavien ryhmää. Mentoroitavat saavat tukea paitsi mentorilta myös toisiltaan. Tapaamiset ovat luottamuksellisia, ja niihin löytyy ohjeita. Langnetin mentorointiohjelma pohjautuu HY:n maisterivaiheen mentorointiohjelmaan. Väitöskirjatutkijoiden mentoroinnin tarve vaihtelee suuresti. HY:n selvityksen mukaan noin puolet väitöskirjatutkijoista keskustelee ohjaajansa kanssa varsinaisen tutkimusaiheen lisäksi laajemmin osaamisestaan, elämästään ja urasuunnitelmistaan. Langnetin välittämä mentorointi ei ole työllistymisväylä; tällainen voi löytyä Suomen Mentorien kautta.

Kuka voi olla mentori?

Mentorit ovat kieliaineiden tohtoreita, jotka haluavat tukea väitöskirjaa tekevää tai hiljattain väitellyttä. Mentori on kokemusasiantuntija, joka on töissä joko yliopistolla tai muualla. Mentorin oman työelämän tulisi olla tasapainossa, jotta mentorointikokemus olisi mentoroitaville positiivinen ja kannustava. Mentorin tulisi voida sitoutua mentoroitavien tapaamiseen noin kerran kuussa noin puoleksi vuodeksi.

Kuka voi olla aktori eli mentoroitava?

Mentoroitavat ovat kieliaineiden väitöskirjatutkijoita tai hiljattain väitelleitä, jotka haluavat keskustella väitöskirjaprojektistaan tai työelämästä ja saada tukea omille tulevaisuudensuunnitelmilleen. Mentorointiin voi osallistua missä tahansa vaiheessa väitöskirjaprosessia.

Omista suunnitelmista ja tuntemuksista puhuminen mentorin kanssa voi jännittää, mutta mentorointiin osallistuneiden kokemukset mentoroinnista ovat olleet hyvin myönteisiä ja siihen käytetty aika on koettu hyödylliseksi. Mentoroitavan tulisi voida sitoutua ryhmän tapaamiseen noin kerran kuussa noin puoleksi vuodeksi.

Haluatko mukaan?

• Jos haluat aktoriksi eli mentoroitavaksi, ilmoittaudu mukaan tällä lomakkeella viimeistään pe 18.3.2022. Lomakkeessa sinua pyydetään kertomaan tilanteestasi ja siitä, mitä haluat mentoroinnilta. Voit vaikuttaa siihen, kenestä tulee mentorisi.
• Jos haluat mentoriksi, ilmoittaudu mukaan tällä lomakkeella viimeistään pe 18.3.2022. Lomakkeessa sinua pyydetään kertomaan jotain itsestäsi ja siitä, mitä voisit antaa mentoroitaville. Kuvauksesi jaetaan mentoroitavaksi hakeville, jotka arvioivat kuvausten perusteella, ketkä mentoriehdokkaista sopivat heidän tarpeisiinsa parhaiten.
• Lopullisen ryhmämuodostuksen tekee Langnetin koordinaattori. Kaikille mukaan ilmoittautuneille ei voida taata mentoria tai mentoroitavia. Ryhmät pyörivät itsenäisesti noin puoli vuotta, loka-marraskuuhun 2022. Osallistuminen on luottamuksellista. Mentorointiohjelma perustuu vapaaehtoistoimintaan; ohjelmaan osallistuminen ei ole maksullista eikä siitä makseta palkkiota.
• Langnet järjestää joulukuussa 2022 mentoreille ja aktoreille yhteisen purku- ja palautetilaisuuden etäyhteyksin.

Group mentoring was piloted at Langnet in 2017, and after the successful pilot, the mentoring programme was run again in 2019 and 2020. This is the fourth time Langnet offers group mentoring. Participants to the previous programmes felt that they got peer support and practical tips, and got to engage in in-depth discussions.

Efforts have also been made to recruit doctors from outside the Academy for the 2022 Langnet Mentoring Program, inspired by discussions at the Langnet Christmas School Career Day on 3 December 2021.

The groups can meet in person (the Covid situation permitting) or online, and the language of discussion is not limited to Finnish.

The idea of group mentoring

In group mentoring, one or two mentors and up to four actors meet and discuss career-related issues. The meetings are confidential. There is a good guidebook for the mentoring sessions. The Langnet mentoring programme is based on the University of Helsinki Mentoring Programme. The need for mentoring varies greatly. According to a survey done by the University of Helsinki, about one half of all PhD students discuss their life and career plans with their supervisors. Langnet’s mentoring programme is not the place to seek for employment; if you are looking for such a programme, you can try contacting Suomen mentorit.

Who can be a mentor?

Mentors are PhDs who want to support younger colleagues. A mentor is an expert-by-experience who works at a university or elsewhere. The mentor’s own working life should be in balance so that the mentoring process becomes a positive and encouraging experience for the actors. Mentors should be able to commit themselves to the group meetings approximately once a month during a circa six-month period.

Who can be an actor (or mentee)?

Actors are PhD students or recent PhDs who want to discuss their dissertation project or working life in general and get support for figuring out their own future plans. You can participate in the mentoring programme at any stage of the dissertation process.

Participants in the past programmes have had positive experiences and found that the time used for discussions in mentoring is time well spent; they enjoyed hearing other participants’ thoughts and found that it helped them position themselves in the research community. Actors should be able to commit themselves to the group meetings approximately once a month during a circa six-month period.

Do you wish to apply for the Langnet mentoring programme?

• If you want to be an actor, please apply using this form by March 18, 2022. In the form, you are asked to tell something about your situation and what you hope to achieve by participating in the mentoring programme.
• If you want to be a mentor, please apply using this form by March 18, 2022. In the form, you are asked to introduce yourself and to tell what you can offer to the actors. Your description will be shared with the actor candidates who use the descriptions to evaluate which mentors are the most suitable for their needs.
• The Langnet co-ordinator forms the groups after wishes have been submitted. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that everyone gets a mentoring group. The groups meet independently for about six months, until October/November 2022. All discussions in the groups are confidential. The programme runs on voluntary basis; there are no participation fees or salaries.
• In December 2022, Langnet will host a joint feedback session for mentors and actors.
