Feminist Food Studies (5 ETC) SPT-550

20.1.-23.3.2020

Teachers: Pieta Hyvärinen & Freja Högback

Level: Intermediate studies

Description: During the course we examine food production and eating from different feminist research perspectives. In the course, food is studied as a constitutive part of everyday life and politics and therefore as linked to the various intersecting differences central to feminist studies: gender, race, class, and sexuality. Also the question of non-human others as and in relation to food is examined in the course. The course deals with, for example, everyday gendered practices around food production, preparation and eating, feminist food justice, animal production through feminist and animal ethics, food from posthumanist and new materialist perspectives, food and racialization, postcolonial perspectives on food, and social movements related to food.  In the course, the student will learn how to think of food from the perspective of different feminist theories. The student will also learn how food is part of feminist politics and what kinds of tools feminist research provides to tackle food-related social and environmental issues.

Working methods: Reading articles, watching/listening to online material, online discussions in small groups, practice-oriented assignments, final essay and self-assessment

Readings, materials: Assigned readings for each week, including academic articles, book chapters, and internet resources (including videos and/or podcasts).

Maximus amount of students 30.

Gender Perspectives on Finland (5 ECTS) SPT-540

3.2.- 3.4.2020

Teacher: Eira Juntti

Course Description: This course looks at Finland through a gender lens. The idea is to show how analyzing Finnish history, culture, and society from a gender perspective can help us better understand the development of Finland first to a nation state and then to a Nordic welfare state in the 20th century. Today, Finland is known as one of the leaders in gender equality, however, there are a number of paradoxes in the Finnish situation, namely there are trends which seem not to fit this image (e.g. high degree of gender segregation in the labor market, gender wage gap, high degree of violent crimes compared to other European countries). Analyzing the history and current situation through a gender lens can help put those trends in perspective, and provide more nuanced analysis of social and cultural change, and of how gender is an important aspect of almost every facet of society.

Course Requirements: Reading the course material and participating in web discussions weekly. Students will post short reflections on the course material in Moodle every week, and discuss the topics in small groups. In the end of the course, students will write a personal learning diary based on their weekly reflections.

Target group/Prerequisites: The course is primarily meant for second or third year Bachelor’s (Candidate’s) students, or students in their early years of Master’s programs in the social sciences or humanities (e.g. history, sociology, anthropology, political science, cultural studies). It is desirable to have completed the introductory courses in the social sciences or history, or an introductory gender studies course.

Course can be used as an optional/elective course in various study programs. Students are responsible for finding out from their own study program what course requirements does this course correspond to.

Tasa-arvon ja yhdenvertaisuuden edistäminen työnä (5op)
16.09.- 22.11.2019
Opettajat: Hannareeta Seling, Anna Heinonen, Anni Granat ja Mari Kupiainen

Hilma-verkosto on järjestänyt suosittua tasa-arvokurssia jo vuodesta 2008.
