It will be a virtual environment, where researchers can find and access data, and also services that can ease their work in research”, summarizes Sara Garavelli (CSC) EOSC’s goals in the near future. However, among researchers, EOSC is still not well known, as researcher Anca Hienola points out. What are the features of a good research data policy? University of Helsinki guidelines to be updated this year
The University of Helsinki is currently updating its research data policy. In this Think Open blog post, members of the working group responsible for the update share their views regarding the needs and goals of the new data policy. Their responses indicate that the key goal is for the shared data policy to facilitate the work of researchers in a concrete way, taking the special nature of research fields and research datasets into account. The respondents also agree on the need for clear guidelines and the definition of responsibilities. The importance of services as part of the guidelines is also noted. The UH policy draft is now opened for commentary.
Millainen on hyvä tutkimusdatapolitiikka? – Helsingin yliopiston linjausta päivitetään tänä vuonna
Helsingin yliopiston tutkimusdatapolitiikkaa ollaan parhaillaan päivittämässä. Think Open -blogiartikkelissa päivityksestä vastaavaan työryhmään kuuluvat jäsenet kertovat näkemyksiään uuden datapolitiikan tarpeista ja tavoitteista. Vastausten perusteella keskeisenä tavoitteena on, että yhteinen datalinjaus helpottaa tutkijoiden työtä konkreettisella tavalla tutkimusalojen ja tutkimusaineistojen erityislaatu huomioiden. Linjauksen selkeys ja vastuiden määritteleminen toistuvat vastauksissa. Myös palveluiden tärkeys osana linjausta huomioidaan.

”The greatest benefit [of open data] is that we do not know. We don’t know where, how and when the data will be used once they has been opened. That said, certain safeguards need to be in place for datasets containing sensitive information. But it does not change the idea; when these datasets are made available, as openly as possible, there is a lot of potential for future use”, says Tuomas Alaterä, Senior Specialist at the Finnish Social Science Data Archive (Tietoarkisto), who has extensive work experience in the areas of digital preservation, open data and data services to support research.

Mobilising data for research and decision-making – interview with Kari Lahti
”I wish that the funding bodies and publishers would not only demand for research data to be dumped in an open repository as it is, but it should be required that the data is stored in an open access repository in a standard data format(s), so that it can be found and reused”, says Kari Lahti, a director of Biodiversity Informatics Unit at the Luomus. What’s the problem with data – an overview of Data Support’s frequently asked topics
University of Helsinki Data Support, a network of experts ranging from library staff to lawyers, helps researchers all year long via a service address datasupport@helsinki.fi. To be able to develop services, Data Support investigated what are the most frequently asked topics in the service email by researchers. Along with data management plan commenting service, most questions asked by the researchers handled sensitive data management as well as storing solutions.
