Pietarissa sijaitseva korkeatasoinen, yhteiskuntatieteisiin keskittynyt Eurooppalainen yliopisto (EUSP) on ollut suljettuna nyt kuukauden päivät ja sen jatko on vaakalaudalla. EUSP:llä oli käynnissä mm. Venäjän vaalien tarkkailuun ja demokraattisuuteen liittyvä tutkimusohjelma. Viranomaiset sulkivat yliopistorakennuksen 7.2. ilmoittaen viralliseksi syyksi paloturvallisuusseikat, ja vaikka EUSP myöhemmin löysi korvaavat vuokratilat, sen luvat peruttiin. Lukukausi jäi kesken, tutkijat ja opiskelijat eivät voi jatkaa työtään ja yliopiston toiminta uhkaa loppua kokonaan. EUSP on ollut merkittävä yhteistyökumppani mm. HY:n sosiologian laitokselle.

Kontakti ry liittyy monien akateemisten tahojen huoleen aiheesta ja on vedonnut Pietarin ja Venäjän viranomaisiin toiminnan jatkamiseksi.

We write to you as representatives of the Sociology students’ society at the University of Helsinki, Kontakti ry., to express our concern about the future of the European University of St. Petersburg (EUSP), closed at the moment due to fire safety reasons. The EUSP is a highly respected institution of academic research and study in the field of social sciences, and also a prominent research partner of the Department of Sociology at the University of Helsinki. It is with great concern and worry we receive the news about the possible closure of the EUSP. We feel that such an event would impact the global academic community as a whole, reduce the quality and amount of important research in social sciences and also put our fellow students at the EUSP in a very difficult situation with no guarantees of the continuation of studies. It is our sincere hope that the EUSP would be allowed to continue its important work as soon as possible, if not in the current premises, then in some other facilities to be located as quickly as possible to let the research staff and students to return to their work.
