After Laji.fi portal was opened in 2015, it has become a weekly tool for biologist and journalist Jouni Tikkanen as he searches for basic information on the Finnish species. Tikkanen hopes that also Finnish National Forest Inventory (VMI) data will also be opened up, as it would offer great opportunities for non-researchers as well: ”With that data as a groundwork I could build both magazine articles, podcast series and books.”

”The greatest benefit [of open data] is that we do not know. We don’t know where, how and when the data will be used once they has been opened. That said, certain safeguards need to be in place for datasets containing sensitive information. But it does not change the idea; when these datasets are made available, as openly as possible, there is a lot of potential for future use”, says Tuomas Alaterä, Senior Specialist at the Finnish Social Science Data Archive (Tietoarkisto), who has extensive work experience in the areas of digital preservation, open data and data services to support research.

”I think open research data promotes honesty and transparency in science. Once a data set is well described, citable and available on clear terms, it is easy to discover and to reuse, and studies done on the data set are easier to replicate and to improve on”, says Mietta Lennes, Project Planning Officer for FIN-CLARIN consortium, which coordinates the Language Bank of Finland (Kielipankki). The open science annual review picks up the main topics in 2020: from Plan S to coronavirus pandemic
The open science review 2020 includes the refinements of Plan S and the tool for checking the Plan S compatibility of publishing channels, it provides a look at the guidelines and recommendations made in national open science coordination, and it provides an overview of the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on the openness of scientific information. The special theme is open access journals that vanish from the web – and the researcher’s means of preserving her or his own research.
Elsevier allekirjoitti DORA-julistuksen – valtaosa viittauksista avoimesti saatavilla
Elsevier kertoi joulukuussa liittyvänsä vastuullista metriikkaa edistävään DORA-julistukseen. Elsevierin ilmoituksen myötä arviolta noin 90 prosenttia tieteellisten lehtien viittauksista on avoimia.
Avoimen tieteen vuosikatsaus 2020, osa 1 – Plan S:n viilauksia, kotimaan linjauksia ja katoavia OA-lehtiä
Avoimen tieteen vuoden 2020 katsauksen ensimmäisessä osassa pureudutaan Plan S:n tarkennuksiin ja julkaisukanavien Plan S -yhteensopivuuden tarkistavaan työkaluun, luodaan tiivis silmäys kansallisessa avoimen tieteen koordinaatiossa tehtyihin linjauksiin, suosituksiin ja ohjeistuksiin sekä tarkastellaan koronavuoden vaikutuksia tieteellisen tiedon avoimuuteen. Erikoisteemana käsitellään verkosta katoavia open access -lehtiä ja tutkijan mahdollisuuksia vaikuttaa oman tutkimuksensa säilyttämiseen. Avoimen tieteen vuosikatsauksen toinen osa (uutiset) julkaistaan 14. tammikuuta ja kolmas osa (blogijutut) 19. tammikuuta.
Lajitietokeskus avasi viranomaistiedolle oman portaalin – lajitieto auttaa luonnon monimuotoisuuden huomioimisessa
Luonnon monimuotoisuuden hupeneminen, luontokato, etenee niin maailmanlaajuisesti kuin kansallisestikin. On laajasti todettu, että luotettavan tiedon saattaminen tehokkaasti maankäytön suunnittelusta vastaavien käyttöön on yksi tärkeimmistä keinoista monimuotoisuuden huomioimiseksi entistä paremmin. Tässä blogiartikkelissa kuvataan, miten Luonnontieteellisen keskusmuseon Luomuksen ylläpitämässä Suomen Lajitietokeskuksessa on luotu yhteistyössä viranomaisten kanssa uusia käytäntöjä ja palveluja lajitiedon jakamiseksi eri sektorien välillä. Tänä vuonna avattu Viranomaisportaali varmistaa lajitiedon tehokkaan välittämisen.
